Powering an Iconic Scottish Brand with a 128 kWp Solar Solution

The Client
Equi’s Ice Cream is a truly iconic Scottish brand, renowned for its award-winning ice cream and long-standing family heritage. As a forward-thinking manufacturer, Equi’s sought to enhance its operational sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of its Hamilton-based factory.
The Project Brief
Lochlie Construction was engaged to deliver a comprehensive, turn-key solar energy solution. The primary goal was to harness renewable energy to power their manufacturing process, significantly cutting CO2 emissions and demonstrating a tangible commitment to green energy.
Lochlie’s Turn-Key Solution
Our team managed every aspect of the project, from initial concept to final commissioning, ensuring a seamless integration with the client’s ongoing operations.
This end-to-end service included:
- Full Design & Engineering: We conducted a complete design and engineering assessment, including detailed structural load verification, to ensure the factory roof could safely and effectively accommodate the new system.
- Supply & Installation: Our specialists supplied and installed a 218-panel solar PV system, custom-designed to maximise the roof’s energy-generating potential.
- Grid Integration: We integrated an export limiting device to ensure the system complied with all grid requirements and operated at peak efficiency.
- Testing & Commissioning: The project was concluded with rigorous testing and a full commissioning process before handing the completed, operational system over to the Equi’s team.
The Results: A Sweeter, Greener Future
This landmark project successfully integrated renewable technology into the heart of Equi’s production line. The factory now runs on clean electricity, directly powering the creation of its famous ice cream.
Key Project Outcomes:
- System Capacity: 128 kWp installed
- Environmental Impact: An estimated 22 tonnes of CO2 emissions are avoided annually.
- Client Benefit: Equi’s has visibly demonstrated its commitment to sustainability, future-proofing its operations and powering its brand with clean, renewable energy.
