Meet the Team: Jonny Renfrew our HSEQ and Compliance Manager

Tell us a little bit about your background

I began my career at Bridgewater Housing Association, working as an Assistant within the Maintenance Department. In this role, I supported the maintenance team in delivering repairs to tenanted properties, void properties, tenanted care facilities, and managing external land areas. During my time at Bridgewater, I also had the opportunity to assist the Clerk of Works on a new build project with Crudens, gaining invaluable exposure to new build construction over a 12-month period. After six years with Bridgewater Housing Association, I moved on to begin a new chapter with CCG Construction.

At CCG, I started as an Assistant Site Manager, supporting two key projects: the renovation of a primary school in Inverclyde and a new build housing development in Barlanark, Glasgow. Following the completion of these projects, I applied for and successfully transitioned into a Trainee Health & Safety Advisor role within the company. Over the next three years, I trained under a team of experienced SHE Advisors and was mentored by a highly skilled SHEQ Manager. Through this hands-on training and further education, I was able to deepen my knowledge and understanding of health, safety, and compliance within the construction sector.

Upon completing my traineeship at CCG, I seized an opportunity to join Carander Construction as a Contracts Manager. In this role, I was responsible for planning, programming, managing, auditing, and overseeing health and safety compliance across all projects. I remained with Carander Construction for three and a half years before recently joining Lochlie Construction Group, where I am proud to serve as the new Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality, and Compliance Manager.

What made you choose a career in construction?

My career in construction developed naturally over time. Growing up, many of my friends and family worked within the industry, and being surrounded by it made pursuing a path in construction feel like a natural and fitting choice for me. It offered the opportunity to build on familiar foundations and continue growing within a sector I had always been connected to.

What are you enjoying most about your new role?

I’m really enjoying my new role at Lochlie. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, which has made the transition smooth and positive. I’m particularly pleased to be dedicating my time fully to Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality, and Compliance within the industry — an area I’m passionate about and excited to continue growing in.

What’s most important to you in life?

Family, friends, and faith are the most important things in my life. I have been married for nearly five years and am blessed with two children — Lottie, who is three years old, and Jude, who has just turned one. We are part of a church based in Renfrew and love being involved in community work. Additionally, we support the Hope Centre, a charity based in Govan that is dedicated to helping and supporting people within the local community.

Tell us a surprising or fun fact about yourself!

During my travels, I spent time in Zambia, Africa, where I volunteered at a local school and orphanage—an incredibly rewarding experience. After my volunteering, I headed to Livingstone to visit the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls. While there, I took on the challenge of white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, one of the world’s top white-water destinations—and famously home to crocodiles! At one point, I was thrown out of the raft, adding an extra thrill (and panic) to the adventure. Luckily, I lived to tell the tale!
