Net Zero Q&A with Jude
Tell me a fun fact about you and how did you get into working with sustainability?
A fun fact about me, I really love nature and wildlife, it’s definitely always been a big part of my life. In the era I’ve grown up in, it’s no secret that all of these things are very much at risk. So definitely for a long time, I’ve always wanted to help build a world that works for both people and nature. I think through studying, I came across sustainability. It just seemed like a really good place to apply those ambitions.
What do you find most rewarding about working with sustainability?
Something that I find really rewarding about working with sustainability is I think the fact that it is attainable and accessible to anyone. As long as you are willing to put in that time to understand how it applies to you and or your business. I think this means that becoming sustainable is not this sort of one path that all have to follow. Actually it’s a range of possible routes that people and businesses often forge themselves. I think from this, there’s a really big problem solving aspect to sustainability. And when you get down to it and you start to solve that problem whatever it may be, whatever context or system or sort of setting that it applies to, I definitely find that really exciting.
What challenges do construction companies face when moving towards sustainable practices?
In terms of the challenges that construction companies face when trying to become more sustainable, I think you have to zoom out here because the construction industry is a fundamentally resource-intensive one. The demands for virgin materials are definitely entrenched into wider supply chains. I think this means it is very difficult for a single company to break the mold and try to become more circular, or become less carbon-intensive.
What sustainable practices set Lochlie apart from others in the industry?
A key sustainable practice that sets Lochlie apart from others in the industry I think, because of the way the industry is, it’s going to take a trailblazer or someone to go against the grain in order to create wider change. I think Lochlie is already doing this with their carbon negative office space, but what’s more important, is the fact that they’re not stopping there and through this initiative, they are looking to do more. Embedding those sort of circular principles and sustainable strategies into operations, in order to go about achieving those wider net-zero targets.
Can you share any specific projects or initiatives you’re excited to roll out at Lochlie?
When it comes to specific projects and initiatives that we are keen to get started on here at Lochlie, beyond measuring our own emissions and using this data to inform our own reduction strategies, we are eager to engage the wider supply chain. Through not only communicating best practice, but even offering footprint measurements for partners and collaborators. On top of this, we are looking to build partnerships with other green innovators in the wider Glasgow area, regardless of industry. I think this is really exciting as it’s going to be these sort of collaborations that are key to creating joint value out of wider net zero initiatives.
What impact do you hope your work will have on Lochlie and the broader community?
The impact I hope my work will have on Lochlie is creating a foundation, if you will, as I’ll only be here for five months so I want to build Lochlie’s capacity to continue innovating strategies that set new standards in the industry, far into the future. Whether that be, through reducing emissions, implementing circular principles or better managing waste. I think that helping to consolidate Lochlie’s position as a green pioneer in its industry or encourage the broader community to adopt similar practices. Starting to categorise that all-important change that will be needed across Glasgow, as we move towards its net-zero targets.
