Revamping the Inverclyde Shed: A Community Project
So, you know that old steel-framed building in Inverclyde? The one that’s been around since the 1940s? Well, it’s got a brand-new look!
The Inverclyde Shed is a community hub dedicated to enhancing the social, physical, and mental well-being of Inverclyde residents. The Shed offers opportunities for service users a space to meet and undertake creative, physical, purposeful and recreational activities of their choice. Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Area Regeneration Scheme and CARES Funding, we were able to revitalise this building and install renewable energy technologies.
Scope of Works
The refurbishment project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the building, including:
- Structural repairs: Removal and refurbishment of the steel frame.
- Exterior cladding: Installation of new steel cladding.
- Internal joinery: Framing, walls, doors, windows, and kitchen fitting.
- Internal Decoration: Internal decoration.
Mechanical and electrical systems: full electrical, plumbing, sanitary and water installations; full heating and ventilation installations; solar PV system; communication, security and control systems; and lift and conveyor installation.
Collaborative Approach
The project was executed through a collaborative effort between the Inverclyde Shed, the construction team, and other stakeholders. Regular design workshops were held to ensure that all aspects of the project were integrated seamlessly. This approach helped to minimise risks and ensure a successful outcome.
Community Engagement
Given the building’s location in a historic harbour area, the construction team implemented a considerate site establishment and traffic management plan to minimise disruption to the local community. Pre-construction meetings with the local roads department helped to address any concerns and ensure smooth coordination.
Added Value
Beyond the essential refurbishment works, the project also incorporated sustainable features to enhance the building’s environmental impact. The installation of photovoltaic solar panels will provide clean energy for the Shed’s operations, reducing its carbon footprint and long-term energy costs.
Conclusion
The Inverclyde Shed refurbishment project successfully transformed a historic building into a modern, functional community space. Through a collaborative approach, careful planning, and the incorporation of sustainable features, the project delivered significant benefits to the local community. The revitalised building now provides a valuable resource for residents to engage in recreational activities and improve their well-being.
